the show already has no meaning. what they should have done from the beginning was have different seasons that rotate between showing off different aspects of the pokemon world. you could have a trainer season, followed by a ranger season, followed by a mystery dungeon season, followed by a tcg season, etc.
instead, it's been 20+ years of watching paint dry with the worst protagonist in anime history.

i'd imagine it would just be yu-gi-oh with pokemon cards, which would have been a ratings bonanza back in the early 2000s. they missed the boat on that because they were too scared to ever move on from the shittiest anime protagonist ever.

even if ash wasn't so obnoxious, the anime's current formula was always doomed to mediocrity in the long run. you can't spend 20+ years making the same protagonist lose the league over and over again without it becoming a boring and meaningless slog.
but that's just pokemon in general. they waste every bit of potential they ever have and run the same tired old material into the ground over and over again. the games are no different in that regard.

That's the issue though, Ash constantly losing is just throwing all of the many years of his character being the "best" down the drain. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if they kept him losing just FOR maintaining the anime's run since kids are tard enough to keep watching for as long as he keeps pursuing an impossible feat.

Training Pokemon, evolving them, catching them. These all are the three tenants of Pokemon but Ash halfasses all of it. Plenty of his Pokemon never evolve, or never reach their final stage. Ash has seen plenty of rare or legendary Pokemon but never catches them. 'Training' amounts to finding cheats to overcome an actual challenge, like fucking Thunder Armor, rather than focusing more on teaching his Pokemon specific moves to cover a weakness like in Gen 3 when Pikachu learned Iron Tail to beat Roxanne. Episodes like that or Swellow learning Aerial Ace were cool, definitely need more of that showcasing Pokemon moves and abilities.

Battle Frontier is impressive, but Ash didn't fight any of them in a full 6v6 battle, could retry them as many times as he wanted, and had challenger's advantage (i.e for Brandon, he could switch Pokemon while Brandon couldn't). Also in leagues, he only uses Pokemon from that region, with the exception of DP where he got TOBIAS'd.

He was essentially the runner up in both the Hoenn League and the Sinnoh League.
