Because she appears like one time before the game ends. In pre release, they tried to hype her up as some mysterious character and gave her reveal as champion be a surprise, but most people forgot she even existed because she doesn’t fucking do anything.

Cynthia is recognized as being GOAT champion, even when you compare her to other male champions. Diantha never stood a chance.

Cynthia didn't do anything in the story, either.
She was an exposition dump and stood off to the side while you did things. She merely had more screentime, is all.
People like Cynthia more because Platinum > XY, and long-haired blonde (begrudgingly) has more widespread sex appeal than a pixie cutie.

This is the right answer. “Getting involved with the story” is a low bar and she doesn’t actually do anything when she does, she just stands around and shit talks Cyrus while you do all the work. And she’s STILL the best champion.

Other than Blue the champions rarely play a role in the story. Diantha isn't even the first to do fuck all, Iris didn't do shit in BW2.

Blue only served as a speedbump to test the player's strength.
Lance and Steven were the only ones to ever actually do anything.
Lance helped you with Team Rocket at their hideout, and Steven helped you with Team Aqua/Magma at the space station.
You could argue Alder was involved in BW, but only really as a final obstacle since the last step in Ghetsis's plot was for N to overthrow the current champion.
Blue, Cynthia, Alder, Iris, and Diantha did diddly squat.

Cynthia at least has more screen presence and gives exposition, so I'd count her as doing something even though not on the same scale as Steven or Lance. Putting her next to Diantha makes no sense, Diantha wasn't even privileged enough to have any importance in the game at all and you only meet her like once wheras Cynthia is in the game many times.

and doesn't then have one of the best battles in the series that poses a genuine challenge. What a perfect team: no obvious connection but it doesn't feel schizophrenic.
The best Champion is objectively either her or Steven, and for the first female Champion to be this popular with a fanbase as autistic as Pokemon she has to be doing something right.

Last time I beat Diantha was 2014 and she was easy. Last time I beat Cynthia was about a month or two ago and she definitely is still one of the hardest Champions.
