I don't know, the whole "expanded rock-paper-scissors" thing works pretty well for the core gameplay, and the variety of moves while being limited to only picking 4 makes for surprinsingly interesting competitive battles.
I just wish it didn't come with all the usual bullshit jrpg tropes, like critical hits, grinding for competitive mons, and massive amount of rng.

Gen 1 and Gen 2 were pretty good as a whole. There's also the home console series (Stadium, Colosseum, etc). Pokemon peaked in Gen 4. Everything else has been shit.

Can’t argue there. Pokemon has always been a shallow and unpolished JRPG carried only by its impressive team building mechanics. Now that those are getting cut too, it’s now obvious to anyone with eyes how mediocre Pokémon really is and always has been.
