Celebi got startled by an explosion while it was watching Ash train and accidentally sent him back in time to when Kukui was 5 years old

It's a Totem Trevenant, and when Ash gets back to the present, it's shown that Totem Trevenant died in the interim

But Trevenant IS one of the genuine ghosts.
How it can die is obvious though. Undead life is still a form of life and can end sooner or later. Whatever force that binds it to the world of the living eventually fades.

It may be a funny moment, but the league is designed in a way that would allow each of Ash's pokemon to get a 1v1 match. Ash can actually find an answer to that question in this season.

>Rowlet will be used in top 8
>Lycanroc will likely be used in top 4 against Gladion
>Pikachu will battle Guzma's Golisopod in the finals
>Torracat will battle Kukui's Incineroar in the exhibition
Perhaps Ash's win in Alola will grant him a sponsorship for the Galar League, and that'll reveal one of the many opportunities for champs. Basically, they can do whatever they want and make lots of money. I'd imagine that Steven Stone and Cynthia make a fortune through their research.

Steven's already rich because his family runs Devon Corp. Cynthia does research on ruins as a side job along with being champion. Just how Diantha's an actress as well as champ.

The battle with Kukui is outside of the league because it's just a prize for winning and he's not actually competing, so that idea just falls apart.

After the 151 battle royale, the Alola League a 1v1 Budokai Tenkaichi style tournament. If Ash doesn't battle Kukui in the post-league exhibition, then only 4/5 of his pokemon will have gotten 1v1 matches in the whole league arc.
