You can see things like this even in Smash Bros. trophy descriptions where it says that Link originated in The Legend of Zelda for the NES in 1987. It's not entirely true, but it's what international fans think.
This has started changing in the past several years though, particularly due to anniversaries and entire timeline acknowledgements. Some franchises, particularly Pokémon, have begun to market themselves as an international brand rather than each locale handling its own thing separately. In 2011, Zelda celebrated its 25th anniversary, and they wanted that to be a worldwide thing, so they began acknowledging it as a 1986 game because that's what it was. Official Pokémon main series retrospect videos released internationally show off Red and Green at the beginning in 1996. There are a few of these around now, I think usually with the announcement of every new Gen since VI. There are a couple of Japanese exclusive ones as well like the one that previewed what would become Pokkén as well as a Daisuki Club video that showed off every intro pre-SM. And for Pokémon to have its big 20th anniversary, they had to say it started in 1996.
