There's literally nothing wrong with the story in pokemon games. All of you are just a bunch of over analysing, autistic fucks that expects Shakespearean level of detail and wrapping in a video game. The main point of stories in video games are to be entertaining and captivating enough to incite the player to progress the game, nothing less. Having a flawlessly written story is something to strive for, but you can't expect every story to be without flaws.

Pokemon at the core is about discovery and when you are railroaded like SM it is boring. Not saying it can't be done but it would have to fine some perfect sweetspot and after SM the most plot heavy game felt like a middle school fanfic I don't think that could be pulled off
