If I recall correctly, there's also a playtime-based trigger for calls as well. In runs where I need Evo stones I usually keep only the number of the trainer I want to get calls from and once I've played enough I set the game aside to have the playtime continue running. Switch off the game and the trigger presumably restarts from 0. Tedious, no doubt, but IMO the call system is only a symptom; the decision to restrict other methods of obtaining the stones to post E4 was far worse.
