That's the thing, despite pokémon actually being just designs created for a video game, at the same point, Game Freak imagine the world they created IS real, albeit separate to ours. When they add a new pokémon to the roster, they're simultaneously saying here is our new design/this is a newly discovered pokémon of the next new region. the fact they take pains to not just call them bits of data going into bank (even though that's all they are). So yes and no anon, it's as real as pokémon are, but not as "real" as pokémon are.
