They didn't. The characters were chosen long before X and Y was even finished. There's also interviews where Sakurai said he wanted a gen 6 rep and chose Greaninja because of the design. That's why it ended up using water swords in Smash 4 because Sakuria had to make the moveset up beacuse he only had concept art to work with.

K Rool was a main bad guy for Donkey Kong. Donkey Kong is in the game. I do think we should have the main bad for each hero added.

The pokemon picks are whatever they want to shill, I’m only slightly mad that we got the kanto starters TWICE in the roster.

Despite being a fan favorite, Gardevoir has never been heavily shilled by nintendo or gamefreak.

The only characters I don’t like are the half dizen sword fighters that fight almost exactly the same but aren’t echoes for some reason; and the pirannah plant, who has always been more of an obstacle than a character or enemy. If they wanted to add Mario mooks, they could have added any of the named monsters from the rpg games. There is probably a named pirannah plant in one of the ones I haven’t played.
