The meditative stance of Abra, the tatoos of Kadabra, and the spoons of the line clearly are reference to common stereotypes related to characters that claim psychic prowess, the advanced mental state, the occult like tatoos, the classic "bending spoon". Even the Mega gets it, doing it as the wise old man.

Mewtwo is the same case as Alakazam though. Even its name "Mew+two" is derivative of Mew. Mew is the common ancestor of all mons, being designed as "fetus-like" to show it, as pretty much all living beings start as one. Mewtwo is meant to be a "progression" of Mew, an evolution, but not a descendant, thus keeping most of Mew's design elements. You can't understand all of Mewtwo's design without Mew and even it's Team Rocket Origins.
