This was at a time when "gamer" became a word in pop culture (not just a video game nerd) and it was becoming mainstream to be a nerd. Then gamer girls and gamer gate and blah blah blah, videogames are now a multibillion dollar market, competitive esports, gamer food, twitch thots, etc... Shits changed for the worse and we all know it.
