Are there people that are genuinely afraid to buy Pokemon games in public as an adult? My friend told me about not wanting to buy a Pokemon game because a cute girl worked at the register. Imagine wanting to hide your power level from some girl who doesn't care about you anyways.

Despite the fact that he worked cash for half a decade and knows damn well they don't remember anyone 30 seconds later, let alone pay attention to what they bought longer than it takes to decide how to shove it in a bag.

I have never cared what I bought because it's pretty obvious most give zero fucks but people definitely do for some reason.

They really need to get over themselves. Unless you go out of your way to act like a retard or it just so happens the person happens to maybe like you for some reason (which is going to be pretty rare) no one's going out back talking about how you bought condoms, tampons, or the latest Pokémon game etc. because they don't remember you exist.

It's people who are just barely adults who are terrified of being seen of childish that push this shit, they're afraid of people having negative opinions of them or otherwise making mistakes as if that's a thing you can avoid in life. And if you're not autistic you should know how to carry out the conversation. Besides, it's nice having small talk over something you enjoy, at least I like it. Some days ago I was buying a cable for my PC and saw the dude had some dusty copy of Diamond at the back, just to ease my curiosity I asked him if he happened to have Soul Silver. Turns out he was a massive fan as well and we stayed talking quite a long time, like about how much we both hated gen 7, till a woman came in asking for PS4 games for his child and I left. It was a really nice, unexpected moment. It wasn't my first time either so yeah, either cashiers don't give a shit or nice stuff like this happens. I've never seen anyone being made fun of for buying.. anything, ever. They really don't care.

Everyone consumes games one way or another nowadays, at most you'll get people who don't even understand what you're buying. They'll just see a bright colored package and that's it.
What you people need to understand is that you're not the center of the world, nobody really gives a shit about what you're doing and most people you cross paths with will forget your existence less than 3 seconds after you're gone.

Funny enough, i know this one guy that completely avoids playing yu-gi-oh for looking childish, but goes and buys mtg cards from the dollar store. He also texts me when he takes a new trail in town because he's afraid of getting lost (within walking distance of his home).

It all comes down to confidence/insecurity with certain subjects. It should also be said that comfortably knowing how to hide your "power level" is important in social situations.

I literally give no fucks buying anything gaming-related & 90% of the time I hope it opens doors for people with same/similar interests to strike up small-talk about & BOOM new gamer/nerd friends.
Like yeah I have social anxiety but I find it easier to interact with people if I have something in common with them, & I use games to break the ice.
as a female I get more funny looks for my gender than I do for my actual purchases. Looks that say "wait wtf a female gamer?!"
Also, I've worked in retail in the past at a little touristy gift shop in my hometown 7 years ago: we literally do not give a fuck what you're buying, just don't be rude & for the love of god DON'T TAKE YOUR SWEET-ASS TIME WHEN WE TELL YOU WE'RE CLOSING IN 5 MINUTES!
