He became emo because he lost a gym battle, a rival caught up to him, and he failed to bring out Greninja's strength. The emo state was because he thought he failed his Pokemon as a trainer.

I wouldn't say he's taking it seriously. He did choose Pikachu in his battle with Hapu for the lulz after all.
But I agree with the second part I thought people were just memeing when they said he was a robot in XY but then I actually watched it and I was shocked by how quickly I got bored of him. Yeah the battles were kinda cooler than usual but I couldn't give a fuck because I wasn't even remotely invested in Ash.

He had a personality in XY as well. It's the same one as in SM with the only difference being that they exaggerate his reactions in SM.

He’s not. He’s the kind of guy who would have a 6 year old monster who is still C rank and doesn’t obey due to being spoiled in monster rancher. Being a good trainer is about balance, about skill and about being able to actually pull the potential out of your critter with the appropriate training regime.

Ash is just a guy who spoils his pokemon and relies on luck to carry him through.

Gym badges are not an achievement. In-universe, gyms are basically schools meant to teach you a type matchup or a trick like a status effect. Gym leaders are even supposed to pick pokemon you can beat, as to make the test fair.

I don’t know what the anime is doing with that, tho.

The anime does follow that, but the gym crawl is still a thing that has to be done on both sides.

It's not a mark of prestige, but in OS the other Pallet trainers that off along with Gary and Ash quit because they couldn't handle being career trainers anyway, and the Gym crawl is part of that, along with traveling and actually managing the Pokemon.

Being a good trainer in the anime is just saying "DODGE THAT ATTACK" and using moves that look cool and occasionally saying a super cool line that gives you a buff.
