For me, characters only really become annoying or grating once they’re in the anime. I grew up with Diamond and Pearl but it ruined my mags of Dawn. Same thing happened with Iris, who was actually a really fun character in game, as well as Serena.
That’s why my favorite female protagonists are the ones not in the anime, like Hilda, Rosa, and Leaf (this one is moreso for Smash though).
