You can basically skip 5th Gen, which was mostly shit. If you absolutely need to play it, only bother with BW2.
BW was the worst selling mainline games for a good reason.

I'll be your designated contrarian, but I personally liked BW waaaay more than BW2. I felt it was more challenging, Cheren and Bianca are better than whatshisnamePurrloindude, the story was better, and (most subjective of all) I loved having only Unova mons to choose from, it was incredibly fun, plus some other small reasons here and there.
But yeah, everyone disagrees with this so go with BW2, I guess.

Its simply objective fact that 5th Gen was much worse received than any other before or after. Only BW2s post-game marginally saved that terrible Generation.

Yes and we were taliking about how POPULAR it was. Thats what "Most people thought it was good" MEANS. It was popular. If most people thought BW/BW2 were good, it would have sold better, but it did not.

The "quality" is entirely subjective.

Thats all true, doesn't change how bad that line of maingames was.
Whatever your personal opinion on quality, BW/BW2 weren't very popular when they actually came out.
You can just look that up on every metric you care to consult.

Now was it bad games, thats a different question. But there is definitely no "consensus" on it having been good. Quite the opposite.

BW could have problems, as every game and thing ever in human history, but it was a doorstep to a more mature direction (not edgy, but the kind of "mature" kids can also enjoy). By rejecting BW and BW2 you have condemned the series to low-effort cashgrabs that will milk KANTOOOOOO for fucking ever.

You didn't deserve Gen 5, but thanks to you, that will remain as the peak of the franchise, with everything from then on falling nosedive

There was literally nothing even remotly "mature" about 5th Gen games. BW2 had great post-game, thasts literally all the entire generation added to the franchise.

But that's the point, people thinking it was good or bad prior to release is all influenced by marketing. If the games had poor marketing, leading people to not be as hyped as a result and thus not buying the games, has nothing to do with its inherent quality. This happens with pretty much every product ever. You can have the greatest thing in the world but if you don't know how to sell it to the people, you won't see any gains and it'll mostly be your fault, since the product is perfectly fine.
Do you think that because people buy more of a certain phone, that automatically makes it better? No, it's all marketing.

If it had turned out amazing, people would have bought it more after release, but no one did.

And people didn't start trying to hail BW/BW2 until after XY out of nothing but sheer contrarianism about how much hype /vp/ was about XY. before that, everyone shat on BW all the time.
