Everyone and their dog has grown up playing or watching Pokemon too so the nostalgia is thick. Not to mention the portability and familiarity of it all since people can carry the game around anywhere or emulate it on their phones while being able to conversate about it with normies because even they know what the series is.
My friends who still play are favimon fanatics and just like playing with their favorite Pokemon when we play the cartridge otherwise we play Showdown to fuck around with meme builds.
I've replayed Heart Gold and Black 2 several times because they're really fun. Played it with a randomizer and had difficulty mods. Same game, new content. Maybe different Pokemon team.
