Pokemon Reborn and Pokemon Rejuvenation unironically have the most content and are the most ambitious fangames out there, with challenge that rewards clever teambuilding and good pacing to ensure you never feel like you have a team set in stone, and are always switching out new members to keep up with new threats. I just finished cobbling together this box art for Space World Crystal. Which is a decent fangame in my opinion. My photoshop skills are garbage, and I used assets of different qualities. But I like having a cover for my games in emulators. And I couldn’t find one for this romhack.
Art provided by a “Sav”. They’re unaware of their kind donation to my little photoshop project. But if someone else wants to use this for their emulated games. here’s a placeholder until someone makes a better one

Insurgence is a side-grade, I'd say. The field effect system and the focus on side content in Reborn and Rejuvenation really set them apart from it. Insurgence is great for its own reasons, the delta Pokemon and reasonable challenge on hard mode, but it lacks a lot of what makes Reborn and Rejuvenation stand on their own.

Reborn is harsh but fair. Rejuvenation is just bullshit. I won't lie though; it was satisfying coming up with the perfect cteam.

Clover is really fun if you don't mind a substantial increase in difficulty and a touch of bullshit in some parts. Most Pokemon's movesets are super OP.

ah yes, excadrill. what a great choice. a pokemon that's not only weak to fire, but also slower, not to mention you're around 20 or so levels below it.
hippowdon just dies to one of its special attacks anyway, and overleveling isn't a great option since your pokemon wont obey you. thank you for lecturing me about strategy. you're clearly a genius.

Gaia is professional, polished, and complete. It's what all hacks should aspire to.

Altered Emerald is unpolished and uneven, but it's really fun to play. Lots of fresh ideas.

My comment will be unnoticed because I won't make a big list or name a big one, but Legends of the arena is the best pokemon fangame ever if you're looking for something comfy, with a great story, no fakemon and the gen 4 art style. It's the most underrated pokemon game and gyms are replaced with tournaments in arenas like gen 8

Alright. Clearly this really was too much for you to grasp. Hippowdon makes sandstorm appear. It's also bulky enough to survive 1-2 hits from Reshiram depending on its IVs and nature. Excadrill also has the ability to go really fast in sandstorm. Alternatively, with a few minutes of Power Anklet training, Excadrill can outspeed the Reshiram since it only has default IVs, EVs, and Nature. I didn't even need to use these because my team was already competent enough to handle a single Pokemon, but even I can recognize when the game is handing you the answer to your problems right before the battle happens.

Pokemon Empyrean has been pretty decent thus far. Not exactly fantastic storytelling, and they added a couple types in for no fucking reason and all three are poorly balanced, but I still find it pretty fun to play. It's got a trope filled timefuck plotline, but you get a fair amount of candies that'll give hidden abilities to whatever pokemon you give them to.

If we're talking about hacks I have similar feelings about Drayano's hacks. I haven't touched Renegade Platinum yet, but, Sacred Gold/Storm Silver is fantastic and Rising Ruby/Sinking Sapphire turned ORAS from barely passable to amazing. I have a soft spot for sensible rebalancing of Mons and a higher difficulty curve for the Pokemon games though.
While I'm less familiar with his work I think I can easily recommend Dio's stuff too though. Supernova Sun/Penumbra Moon's battles were done extremely well and left me feeling satisfied after completing them.
Here's hoping hackers and modders can fix the train wreck that Gen 8 is shaping up to be like they fixed 6/7.
