even though it was 1st edition? i had 5 and i believe 2 were first edition since i was playing a fire/lightning deck at the time. i also left my cards inside a cabinet without any disturbance from other objects.

Collectors are EXTREMELY particular about even the most minute of defects, such as faint surface scratches that are only visible from certain angles and tiny white specks on the edges or backing of the card. However, that said even lower grade shadowless charizards are still worth a decent bit of cash, and it's possible that your cards were in decent enough condition to be a worthwhile investment to collectors if they were as well looked after as you suggest, so sure, you probably lost out on a bit of money. It's just extremely unlikely that they'd fetch the price of a gem mint card, and the value falls off fairly steeply from there.

Yes. All 1st edition are shadowless, but not all shadowless are 1st edition. And really, if it isn't a graded 1st edition, you're not getting as much as you think.
I sold a shadowless Charizard a couple months ago for about $160.
