I know we talk all the time about evos that are dissapointing, but what evos genuinely blew away all your expectations and were better than you could've imagined? I'll start, Vikavolt literally couldn't have been more perfect design-wise.

Was very disappointed with how ugly and retarded Pignite turned out to be. Was pleasantly surprised when it finally evolved. I think the swirls on the stomach are too much but overall I love the damn thing.

Terms of design:
Gliscor(surprisingly perfect. When Sinnoh was full of iffy evos)
Torterra(best designed starter hands down)
Clawitzer(just look at it)
Aegislash(better than three swords)
Leavanny(expected worm -> butterfly/moth again. Instead got a unique concept and solid stats)

Terms of typing:
Swampert(Quagsire on steroids? Awesome!)
The Nidos(one of the reasons they're my favorite gen 1 pokemon)
Starmie(Made the design more interesting)

Probably Dragalge. I completely forgot about Skrelp until I saw Dragalge here on /vp/. The first picture of it was pretty shitty, it seemed jumbled, but when I got to see it better I completely turned. I think it's an instant classic design. Also, the fucking typing was unexpected. I basically gave up on GF giving us exciting type combos.

Uh, Emboar is exactly what you would expect out of Pignite except the fire beard. I was only slightly surprised by it.
What I wasn't expecting out of it is getting one of the coolest shiny palettes in the series. God what a beauty

When I was a kid, I never knew Magikarp evolved into Gyarados until Generation III.

The typing was unexpected? It was a sea horse. The other sea horse became Dragon-type in its final stage too.

As I mentioned it was unexpected because I gave up on the idea of Pokémon changing types upon evolving. (Gen 5 had none) Poison/Dragon seemed too good to be true. Yes, it's a sea dragon, but GF can make lousy typing decisions sometimes.

This thing is actually good on a rain team with defog support, if you can keep rocks off the field it’s a surprisingly good special wallbreaker. I still wish it had just been a fast special attacker with tail glow or something though, I’d trade a chunk of that monster sp atk for useful utility.
