GameFreak basically backhanded their longtime fans with this national Dex decision.
Casuals don't care though. I wonder what it would take to make Pokemon controversial enough that regular people wouldn't feel comfortable letting their kids play it- Or paying it in public, themselves.
Like what kind of scandals would need to come out? In the 90's, loads of parents were concerned over the violence. Could there be an argument that Pokemon encourages paganism(Satanism) to the uber religious Christian mom's? Maybe it encourages Buddhism to Muslims and vice versa? It's got enough Legendaries(God's) for the paganism argument. Some ghost Pokemon have children's souls. That's not super Christian, for sure. Alex Jones types could jump on and spread that idea. Jones loves going on about Satanism and he's still got a dedicated following. The bell sprout tower in Gold/Silver/Crystal was Buddhist or Shintoism-y enough to make strict Muslim parents uncomfortable.
Loads of regular people hate Walmart because they treat employees shitty and price out local businesses. Amazon is becoming unpopular because of how they treat their employees. Does GameFreak mistreat employees? Do they have a publicizable history of sexism? Racism? Has slave labor been used to make their games? Everybody has secrets. Every big company has fucked up at some point. What has Pokemon done? Anything that would offend the masses? Anything citable? Something worth leaking to all of those chest-clutching mom groups on Facebook? And to BuzzFeed? News sites? Click bait pages? Reddit?
GameFreak won't give up Pokemon as long as it's profitable. Right now, they can slap the brand name on any junk game and people will still buy it. Masuda isn't stepping down any time soon. Unless he absolutely must.
But maybe that could change with enough controversies. The right controversies.
GameFreak deserves to be boycotted by everyone but not everybody cares about the same things.
