Not played 1 but I think number 2 got in your way less.
I was frustrated by how when the characters in 3 concluded that some pokemon that could walk on water was invovled, there is a bunch of dialog before they tell you it's Suicune. If you've figured that out, you don't want to be told, and if you haven't figured it out you'd prefer the surprise of seeing it over being told what to expect.
Then again I was a few years older when I played 3 compared to 2.
