Pokemon are pretty simple and fun games that anyone can beat. Playing with cute and cool monsters-animals of your choices are big bonus on top of battling and catching. Also it's appealing to people with autism easily.

Pokemon is successful because of the uniqueness of each Pokemon. They intentionally hide some numbers from the player because they want them hidden. You're supposed to have fun without ever getting involved with the game mechanics because that would require gloves.

any sort of story the game(s) provides along with new mons, other than that, I'd say the community itself. Pokemon is a cult-classic, so the community is close (if not already there) to being a die-hard for the series after pouring so much time into it (since people have actually memorized all of their names with typings).

the main reason though, is because it's mainstream.
