Why do steel type trainers often contrast with their own type? Jasmine is a normal little girl, Molayne is just a chill dude, Steven is some rich kid
The only one who fits somewhat is Byron. The Kalos dude has no personality so we'll never know

Steven does some researches about minerals so Steel typing kinda fits him but you can't tell just from his look. Imho designs that doesn't scream which type of pokemons they must own are more interesting.

Before battle

Upon being defeated

After being defeated
>"What now? What sweet, glorious pain and joy now rock my mighty heart? My will, which even shakes spears, trembles at so fine a battle as this! I am undone! Good sir/lady, you are indeed our equal-- and worthy to enter this lofty hall!"
If battled first:

He's very cliche, but other characters in Pokemon don't really have room to talk. I have always loved knights personally, so I'm just happy that there's an actual knight in the games, a member of the E4 with an Aegislash as his ace, no less.

Kalos E4 gets too much hate. Siebold was really cool and Drasna is one of the sexiest Pokegirls and the best Dragon-type trainer along with Iris. The arenas for the Kalos E4 were also pretty neat.

I'm really fine when characters go in either direction. Whether it's cliche or if it subverts my expectations entirely, I think all that matters is the execution. If they can nail down a good aesthetic, I'm usually a big fan right off the bat.

But I honestly don't think Pokemon has a lot of impressive trainer or gym leader/E4 designs. A lot of them are pretty cute and nicely done, but the designs themselves usually don't "wow" me.
