It's clearly a design choice though or intended for comic relief . I'd actually put money on the later, I just beat SM for the first time a few days ago and the main character is visibly shocked/scared during the scene when Lunala flies through the worm hole thing one of the few times when the game expects you to take it seriously.
Another option is that since they are the player avatar they don't want to force emotions on the player that they clearly aren't experiencing. Either way though the SS protagonist looks much more expressive than the SM one.
