What happened to the old fan translations for games?

I've heard stuff here and there about fan translations for games as old as Gold/Silver, I do remember fan translations for Platinum, HG/SS etc from the time.

My question is what became of these translations? Could they still possibly exist somewhere or have they been lost to time after the official translations released?
