It does its job with some annoyances. It has like 7 or 8 game modes, most of which are gimmicks but typically cute gimmicks and with Single AND Double variants most of the time. The Master's Battle is the only one that feels entirely balanced "by hand" the way the Stadium games were, and it's the one you'd beat to feel like you've "beaten" the game. You want to do a LOT of battling, you'll get a lot of battling. You do need a Gen 4 DS game with competent Pokemon to get the most out of it, so you cannot emulate it standalone. But then you can only use one DS save file per PBR save file, only register Pokemon to one Battle Pass at a time, and only buy each reward for your given DS game once (but are not told when you've done it and can waste coupons buying them again). Wonder whose bright ideas those were.
