These dudes wanted Pokemon 2 to be the end of the series. The anime was planned to end with the "first" movie, presumably shedding light onto that Misty epilogue scene shown in Japan during super early production.
The manga almost pushed a vulgar, perverted, disrespectful, manbaby Clefairy as the fucking mascot of the series and Pikachu being picked was pretty much out of the anime director not wanting a "canon" starter choice and liking Pikachu.
The entire franchise is a circumstantial clusterfuck of accidentally right timings. None of this shit was planned to be as big as it was until it actually happened.
