Why are they pushing the human characters so hard this gen? Even SM's trailers spent more time promoting the actual Pokémon.

Because that's the direction the franchise is going in

The anime (the main promotional tool for the franchise) makes this especially obvious by having the largest main cast to date. The Alola group has a whopping six characters. And that's not including characters like Rotom Dex and Kukui who appear in almost every episode.

Because they realised that the human characters are as much of a selling point as the Pokémon are at this point.
As a result, the Pokémon get less effort put into them in favour of the human characters. Soon the Pokémon will be a complete afterthought and humans will be the main focus of the whole franchise.

three reasons.
1): masters and anime want the human characters to be recognizable.
2): Its entirely possible they may actually put some level of effort into the plot. I doubt it but the chance is there.
3): there will be a lack of new pokemon, and they seek to cover that by showing the humans to say "look at all the info we've shown" even though said info is irrelevant.

The Pokemon aren't secondary, the anime is doing the same shit as Masters, tons of characters but most of them only have one or two Pokemon with one of those Pokemon being their "Partner Pokemon" that's their best friend and follows them around everywhere.
