It's a hamster. Their tails are already little bitty, so this design just ended up that way. the only thing that bugs me about it is it's fucking mouth. It should be curvy, like Pikachu's. The straight line smile is just WEIRD.

Its Japanese name is the same as its English name, like most Pikaclones. And at best it's a hamster/guinea pig fusion, like how Dedenne was a gerbil/hamster fusion. But Dedenne was still primarily gerbil, and Morpeko is primarily hamster.

Naming my gen 2 rival was uncomfortable because, while naming it 'Jamie' after my brother was natural and consistent with my nature to surpass, his paranoid and psychopathic nature meant that he would check my savefiles for such indulgenses, and he would beat me for them. If you want to put in this way, bacterias, insects and mushrooms are living beings even if they aren't properly animals or plants. But my point wasn't that.
My point is that the designers aren't forced to follow the elements of our animals, but they can be more creative and make a new being. That's why we see in the pokéworld something like ghosts or machines or even simply objectmons.

I agree, yellow electric rodent that stores electricity in its cheeks is way too specific to be recycled every game. I think that regional birds and dragon type pseudos are also lame, but at least they have a good amount of variety.
