Best way to learn to appreciate a pokemon you don't like is to actually use it, get it as quickly as possible and make it your lead/ace and avoid using anything else if it isn't absolutely necessary, when it manages to carry you through a tough battle and you find yourself relieved and excited to have won you'll have forged your bond.
