Mimes, oni, ninjas, etc. are common folk and/or professions. Greninja being a ninja is okay, but if they had made a green turtle with a bandana and called it Turtinja now that's a pop culture reference and when it stops being okay. It's unoriginal and really takes away what makes Pokemon unique, what really draws you into that fantasy world.
