Now that the Regional Variants gimmick is not exclusive to Alola anymore, would it be possible for us to see a region with no new species, but only with regional Variants, maybe featuring cross gen evos as the only way to present new species? How would this work? How interesting could it be? What would you expect to see in such region?

No because new pokémon ultimately drive the franchise. A region without any brand-new pokémon wouldn't be as profitable to the franchise, regardless of what they did with the pokémon implemented.

A region full of regional forms means less work for them cause they don't have to come up with entirely new concepts, instead slap on a new colour and a mustache and call it a day.

Game Freak also do what makes them the most money anon. As much as you want to spack out about "muh lazy", doing something like you suggest would never happen, because they'll make far more money doing as they've always done and keep adding new pokémon.

They know that it won’t sell and will get backlash for being extremely lazy unless the designs are amazing and they do something like what they did to galar linoone and give it’s own evolution they should give normal linoone it’s own evolution that’s more like it
Even still they would need new starters and legendaries and like 20 new mons that are also amazing and bring back a bunch of features and add more to make it unique then maybe if not if it’s like the current games then it will suck hard and is dumb

existing mons deserve more attention and personality, and existing gameplay deserves more improvement. if pursuing this strategy meant we would get more of that, then yes I would even prefer it to another rehash of the same shitty game with 200 more useless shitmons wasting time, money and effort just to go into a box because the broken gameplay makes them unusable and their lack of variance or personality of any kind makes them boring.

there's now 7 generations of new shit to play with and pretty much every reasonable demographic has something to fit their tastes at this point, it would be really nice if game freak bothered to polish things instead of just burying it all under more and more shit to the point that it continues to become unmanagable
