Dark/Fairy and Poison/Fairy used to be my two most anticipated types. Impidimp is fucking ugly, and this feels like Fairy was slapped on for no reason. Nothing about this gen has been good so far. I don't know why people get hung up on the dexit bs when basically everything else is also shitty.

It's an air purifying monster, I think fairy makes as much sense as anything here

I think it's because fairy type is more of a mythical type, not actual literally only fairies. In a similar way to other types not always being literally what they are named after.

It'd make more sense to be steel considering it has a smokestack on its head. Fairies aren't exactly the purification mons. Those tend to be either Grass or random one-offs.

Actually, they don't. It's only a portion of them that care, to the point where it's more of a species trait than something relevant to the entire type.

Thankfully we have precedence that a Pokemon doesn't have to be completely made of metal (or even mostly) to be called a Steel-type, so it's close enough.

I know there's other games where Fairies are pretty heavily tied to cleaning the environment, and are very mature focused. Is that grounded in something other than video games? Like folklore from somewhere?
If it is something along those lines, I could see that being the reason..
With that said, Poison Steel is one of my more desired type combinations, and I would have loved to see it on something with levitate. But Poison Fairy is a damn good typing too.

This. It works and doesn't require much internal logic to justify. If you want it to be "realistic" you'd get more water/flying monstrosities like Gyrados that took until Gen 6 with its Mega to make viable.
