You can beat the game just with your starter. Gen 4 is actually hard (Dppt only, hgss is easy as all fuck)

Just pickup any Pokémon you come across that you want to use and just grind at the Battle Chateau until its of level. Pokémon X/Y has so many Pokémon new and old that for me, it's hard to choose.

No pokemon game is hard as you can save anywhere and thus have unlimited do overs just like Skyrim. No I'm saying Emerald is harder than Gen IV on when TPC decided to say fuck it they're going to handhold you on EVERYTHING
