That's not how it works

The same people don't stick around forever, Pokemon's audience is constantly replaced. Old fans outgrow or become disillusion with the franchise, and new ones replace them, then they grow up and the cycle repeats.

And that's by design too; TPC wants the older fans to quit so they can keep doing the same thing over and over again.

Here’s the thing, it wouldn’t interfere with the business model. Having an intern spend two shifts at work putting in a skip button for SM would have been no fucking skin off their nose. Interrupting you each 3 seconds to tell you some irrelevant shit isn't a good way to tell a story.
Telling a story by means of gathering items, or making sidequests to put story together like pieces of a puzzle is a good way to tell a story.

Kids do care, it's just that adults are too daft to even remember that so many of them out there have also grown up watching shows and reading books with compelling narratives.
There's nothing stopping them from trying to make something interesting in a game (especially an RPG). It's how you keep these things memorable.
