GameFreak doesn't care. They know they could do better, they know we know they know they could do better, but they don't care. The games don't make as much money as everything else and are probably the most expensive thing to produce, more so if they truly up-scaled things. GF was fine making 2D GB games, they were easy. Now games take more effort, more resources, more power to make. They don't want to put in the effort for little return. Its not about making games anymore. Its about money. Never expect Pokemon to be good again.

The impression of GameFreak I get is that they had a runaway hit early on, but it's never what they wanted to saddle their horse to. Following monsters don't make or break the game, but it is a nice immersion feature. While I did enjoy Dawn/Dusk, a lot of the following sprites were fucked up looking because they clearly all had to adhere to the same size-space.

Should I buy this game?
The only other DQ I have played was the very first one for the nes and I thought it was bretty gud. I love the monster designs but am kind of lukewarm on jrpg in general. Is there enough time wasting sidequesting and collecting for me to enjoy time outside of battle?

Switch is somewhat more powerful than the PS3/360, but it's still far below the PS4 in terms of processsing power.
This is gonna be even worse in the Switch Lite since it's got no docked mode to overclock it.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if GF actually accepted the shitty visuals because they want it to run steady on Switch Lite and are too lazy to do proper optimization differences between the docked and undocked settings.
