Masuda can say johto is actually Spain but it obviously isn't just like unova clearly isn't NY.

All of asia despises Japan and the feeling is mutual, the reason they got so close to the western powers is because none of their geographic neighbors would have anything to do with them. japan did worse shit than germany during world war 2 but unlike germany they refuse to acknowledge it and teach their kids that they were completely justified in their acts of unprovoked aggression in the pacific theater during ww2 and the rape of nanking definitely never happened, all those photographs and half-japanese children are western propaganda.

I admit it's not a great analogy, but the threat of young japanese people internalizing the ideals of xenophobic imperialism that their entire society held as truth until like 50 years ago is very real. there's a lot of imperialist dogwhistle in modern japanese media.

No argument with you there. I'm just saying most of the east asians still really pissed off about Japans WW2 crimes are older citizens, mostly seniors who were around when that happened. Theres no doubt that the anti-Japanese view has been passed down from generations and theres young people who feel the same way as their grandfathers, but its significantly less than it was back in the 1950s. Japanese products like Pokemon were banned in Korean until about 10 years ago for example. Pokemon Go was a big hit and most people playing it dont care about that Pokemon originated from Japan, and Japans past in general.
