>>39671118I think a valid possible answer (may not apply to everyone) is that you probably spent countless hours of your childhood getting the original 151 drilled into your memory, due to all the constant exposure you had to them during Pokemania. However, since you didn't spend nearly as many hours on the newer generations (or get as much exposure as the OG 151), they don't feel as iconic because you didn't spend as much time with them (nor possibly did you care to do). I played Gen 1 - 4 and spent pretty much an equal amount of time on all four gens, so all the Pokemon from the sum of those four gens feel just as memorable as Gen 1, which only feels slightly more iconic because they were the first ones on the scene. Gens 5, 6 and 7 don't feel as iconic or special to me because I never played them, or as in the case of Gen 5, lightly touched then never touched again.
