I've always figured it was to stop the show from having a "jumping off" point. Like people who stopped watching Digimon after the first season, because they didn't really want to get invested in a new cast. Keeping the same character makes it feel more like a direct continuation, even if Ash is largely a different character in everything but name.

Except that is not working considering the outrage from BW series. All it ever did was causing more continuity issue and making any form of development meaningless.

In fact, their actual reasoning feel the opposite. They knows that they can not bet on newer fans so they clinging to Ash to stop the older fans from leaving.

Shows that keep the main character throughout decades aren't new, having a central protagonist makes it easier to market the anime as one brand, it continues the story in a way that someone from years ago can see what he's up to now, and it mirrors the viewers who have played through multiple games and is already familiar with pokemon and his travel partners fill in for newbs.
Changing protagonists doesn't automatically make the writing better, it just makes it different from what you're used to and have grown tired of.

No it doesn't , it only make matter more complicated and harder. Specially when the anime has to keep up with the game.

But forcing a protagonist to stay for 20 years by screwing all his development and making him fail is nothing more than bad writing.

Pokemon is a game franchise that has become a brand. Therefore replacing Ash does not effect the franchise since the anime itself is pretty irrelevant at this point.

Which is the biggest TCG franchise that earn enough profit to run an anime continuously for 20 years.

Why don't you look at Medabot? It kept Ikki as the protagonist while replacing 90% of the anime's cast just like Pokemon yet nobody even remember it unlike Yugioh, Precure and Digimon.

The term "Pokemon Master" comes from the gen 1 games, where it's used as a synonym for champion, and said to mean "the most powerful trainer in the world". Though it was operating on the following logic:

Back then the American marketing was pretty fucking halfassed, so you probably had Topps or something claim that you had to collect all the Topps trading cards to become a Pokemon Master. But in actual video game canon, it's just an ancient obsolete term that was retconned out alongside a bunch of other gen 1 stuff mentioned in that post. The reason the anime still uses it is mostly just because Ash went around talking about becoming a Pokemon Master so much the term became associated with him, and not that one line of dialogue from the game that I don't even remember who said. I think it was Lance.

I always figured "Pokemon Master" was something akin to the grandmaster title in martial arts or chess, or getting registered in the major league hall of fame. It's the highest title you can achieve, but there's no real set way to earn it (before they added set grandmaster qualifications to chess, anyway). You just have to be recognized as someone who's accomplished great things across your career.

Yugioh's issue is every protagonist after Yugi except Yusei and the story set around them were generic garbage. What made 1st gen Yugioh good was because it dealed with genuinely creative themes like a nerd protagonist and a egyptian soul stealing lore.
Pokemon Adventures proved that the story could work with a new protagonist each season, but people only remember Ash due to the 90s anime nostalgia. DBZ and Sailor Moon are treated the same way due to this.

A good writer wouldn't need to hold a character hostage in order to gather attention for a story arc unless it had a big importance to the plot. No it does not since Medabot kept Ikki and Erika as the protagonist while replaced 90% of cast like Pokemon.

There is no point of bringing game since Pokemon game change protagonist everytime unlike the anime..

Furthermore Jojo change protagonist with every series and it is still praise by people including the latest series of Jojo that ended few days ago.

OS Ash, AG Ash, DP Ash, BW Ash, XY Ash and SM Ash are all, aside from a few similarities, basically different characters. They act differently, battle differently, mature differently (or not at all), etc. It's basically a new Ash every time.
