The reason why the pokemon games sell what they do regardless of quality id because of the mainline games is near-monopoly of its genre, monster-catching RPG for the masses. TPC relies too much on its brand name and merchandise to sell. If a competitor does the same but better, the brainless fanbase will leave Pokemon in the long term for their much sexier competitor.
Pokemon has the risk of becoming a nobody in the next 20 years of they rely on Hollywood-style business instead of maintaining the loyalty of the hardcore audience.
