>>39694881When I was a kid I didn't get to the party where May replaced her, as I'd fallen out of the franchise. I went back when I was in my teens and nostalgia kicked in, and while May was kinda shocking, I liked that she had a clear goal in mind after getting into Pokemon. Her character development always felt a lot clearer than Misty's did, and she felt more like a protagonist than a sidekick like Misty.
So yeah, I get the initial dislike of change, but not the long-term hate. Also I never made it to Dawn or any of the future MC changes, were they just as good?
