It was shit when it was made. Starting with a gen doesn't make it your favorite. Some of this is flat out wrong too like a lot of people quitting because of BW's 'reset'. Gen 3 is when a lot of people dropped the series. Gen 5 is when people actually started coming back to it. And USUM making people who bought SM feel like they bought an unfinished game shouldn't be something new. Crystal, Emerald and Platinum did the exact same thing. But we can't point out anything that makes gens 3-4 look bad now can we?

The thing is most kids come into Pokemon through the toys and anime before the games. And during Pokemania there was much more. Like for me there was the anime, then there were the figures in the gacha machines, then I got Red but couldn't make sense of it and gave up at Viridian City, then there were the anime novelizations, the Taz collectibles in packets of crisps, the magazine giveaways, then the TCG, then the TFG, and only by the time Diamond and Pearl came around was I sensibly able to play the game (but maybe I'm retarded). The games are aimed at roughly ten year olds but the franchise gets you at all ages between 2-14

I don't blame BW for the decline, but it could be called the beginning of the end. It was the first real dip since Ruby and Sapphire, though I think BW were the better games. I consider every game after Ruby and Sapphire to be an improvement over the last, and I include DP being better than Emerald. BW is the exception before Gen VI, but it's hard to follow up content-rich games like Platinum and HGSS. I don't really care that the Pokédex was all new until the post-game, it didn't bug me or excite me. I think the idea was worth trying out though. B2W2 was back up to snuff with all the things you could do, but I think that Gen V is that grey area where things started to change for the worse (increased linearity for the story to the point the region became a line) while also still being part of the acclaimed DS era.

Yes, the Crystal showed that the fad had died, but RS literally only had 200 Pokémon until Colosseum a year later, unless you want to count the Jirachi distribution. And it wasn't just that. The entire Generation was so fragmented between games, Pokémon, and accessories required to unlock everything. The link cable, GB Player, wireless adapter, e-Reader (and e-Reader+), all the cards (many of which weren't released outside Japan), Pokémon Box, Pokémon Colosseum, Pokémon XD, etc. You couldn't even get Celebi through Colosseum outside Japan, leaving it as that bizarre gap. And RS were so obviously rushed out with half the region being water filler and nearly half the Pokédex being non-existent and the almost total lack of post-game. Yes, Emerald had the Battle Frontier, but the post-game didn't get much more than that. They fucked up with Steven being a Red battle by making it a one time thing, both box Legendaries were already available in any Gen II game, you get the other fossil, and the Safari Zone got expanded. DP had a shitton of content all throughout and brought back a lot of Gen II's improvements. It was a return to form.

In terms of performance and making use of the hardware, it's better, but BW was kind of a weak follow up to the prior years. B2W2 is up there with the hest of Gen IV and may be considered better depending on what you're looking to experience.

So 50 less than the last game (actually less than that if you don't count cross gen trading) and more than the first? This is nowhere near as big of a deal as you're making it out to be. D/P having more Pokemon than R/S doesn't make them better games. Just like S/M having the most Pokemon out of any game for the rest of the series doesn't make it any good. It's even worse when you realise a bunch of the new Pokemon added are either shitty legendaries or evolutions of old Pokemon that no one asked for that make quite a few of them worse design-wise.

And what exactly does D/P have? A bunch of Legendary encounters?

The fact that you even need to talk about irrelevant side shit like e-Reader that has no impact on the actual quality of the games when comparing them is so telling. Also imagine bringing up unobtainable legendaries when trying defend Gen 4. The only actual interested non-box legends are all locked behind obscure distribution events, one of which didn't even make it to the west.

By design, Gold and Silver can obtain 199 Pokémon individually without any sort of trading or glitches. That number is 179 in Ruby (because Moon Stones are finite) and 180 in Sapphire. It's true that having a lot of Pokémon isn't an inherent benefit (Kalos is an example of quantity over quality), but DP turned its approximately 445 Pokémon into a real hunt, especially post-game once you obtain the National Pokédex.

Oh yeah, and as for the events, it actually HAD events and not just distributions. Gen I didn't have real events, nor did GS or RS, but DP did. You might be able to count the Eon Ticket and Southern Island for RS, but it's somewhat debatable when it spreads like herpes to other games by mixing records. There was an event for Darkrai, an event for Shaymin, an event for Arceus. Even transferring a Manaphy egg from Ranger was a somewhat unique process with a unique egg. Emerald's events were neat, but Navel Rock, Birth Island, and Southern Island were ripped from prior games with only Faraway Island being unique to it.

I'm also a 97 and I find this image accurate in 2019. I was a huge Pokemon fan & gen 3 player during 2003-2006. I was still somewhat into Pokemon when gen 4 came out and bought Diamond the week it came out, but lost interest quickly, and never got past the third gym leader in that game. From there on I haven't gotten any gen 5+ stuff.
