Anime Meowth was meant to be unlike any other Meowth more human-like, while at the start it also was similar to others of his kind with the time they made his limbs thinner probably so he could use gadgets better. We can his Yellow Sprite reflect that, however somewhere along the transition of Gen 2-3 they made other Meowths more like him and by Gen 4 we can see the change was done completely.
