Game Freak previously stated they wanted to have the protag ages as 16 in gen 5, older than the usual preteens, but lowered them to 14. To keep the "aging with the players" thing and reaching GF's original idea of 16 year old protagonists, this would put Serena and Calem at 16. Some people think Emma's dialogue implied Calem and Serena may be as much as another year older, I like to believe it's a happy middle ground where the characters start off 16 but are 17 as of the post-game. Kalos did have a region that appears to go through four seasons as you travel through it, which I always took as an implication that the journey takes place over a year.
