Almost everyone knows the difference between a mesh and a model. It's just a colloquialism to call them the same thing. I have friends who work with models that do that.

Nobody in the business will use the term “model” to refer to the texture in any way shape or form. They refer to it as the texture, the mat, whatever. “Model” is universally accepted common parlance for the 3D mesh
