I'm in Kanto and it's kind of a pain to go through and feels pointless, should I just drop it or does it pick up?

They say HGSS are the best remakes, but they are far from perfect.
They could have given the Gym Leaders more Johto Mons; they could have fixed the level curve; they could have filled the pointless void called "Kanto" with some interesting events.
Johto is the only funny part of the game, just drop it, unless you want ti grind for hours just to beat Red.

If anything, moving around Kanto is boringly easy because:
1. You already have every HM available except for rock climb
2. Every trainer and wild mon is underleveled (the inevitable tradeoff so you can do most gyms in whatever order you want).

It really doesn't. You can just "go anywhere" save for Blue and Cerulean Cave which cheapens things

It doesn't. The pokemon available there are the same ones you'd run in Johto, the trainers levels are somewhat higher but can't rematch them unless you get phoned by them, and there's no good post game story here.
