Status moves have their uses, but anyone hoping to use an Eeveelution for their actual typing right out of Celadon in Gen 1 still has some ways to go. It's not even remotely comparable to gift legendaries.
>>39759636In Gen 1, there is at least pairing up Vaporeon with Ice Beam from the vending machine girl too. But overall, the first moment any of them learns a STAB is Flareon at level 36. Vaporeon at least gets Aurora Beam then and Surf is all but guaranteed.
Regardless, GF probably took note of this, because in Gen 2 they threw field rewarding of classic evo stone to post-E4. Ironically the Eevee line barely felt the road bump because Espeon/Umbreon exists while every other user of the classic stones needed to cull Pokegear numbers and pray for the right call.
