it's not necessarily the cover art. it's the box mascots themselves. GS's covers were literally just ho-oh and lugia on the boxes but those looked stunning

Pokémon covers have always been lazy and shitty to be honest. Fuck the stock Sugi artwork.
But yeah, that doesn't change the fact they should improve them because they do look bland.

I'd say the best covers are the XY and PMD ones.

Those look worse than the actual covers, which I'm pretty indifferent of. These are big stylistic departures an don't feel like they reflect the franchise or tone of the games so much as they are limited-context attempts at making something strictly 'cool' or visually more interesting than the standard variations just for the sake of it.

Additionally, I don't doubt the possibility of the scale and backgrounds changing to reflect the cover Legendary Pokemon typing close to release when and if that information comes up. Not something I think of as likely, though.

I can’t get over how much I dislike these box legends for this gen. I was able to at least tolerate all the previous box legends despite how they looked because they do at least look legendary. I just don’t feel it with these two. On top of looking bland, they just don’t feel legendary like the rest. They look like oversized ordinary pokemon with added decorations, basically just over designed.
