"Explore" is a strong word. I would get excited to explore the optional areas in each region because they usually had a meaningful design with interesting content. I wouldn't doubt that the Wild Area is just one big plain with grass and water here and there. Like you're not going to find a secret underground entrance to some ruins or a mountain with interconnected caves or any kind of maze-like elements.

No. I'm excited for it too. I'm glad they're taking steps to start putting open world gameplay. Hopefully in gen 9 they'll keep expanding on it.

I say you shouldn't keep your hopes high, because GameFreak is no stranger to tricky advertising, and for all we know this wild area could be as empty as Hyrule field from Oot (inb4 trees)
A big hub world =/= open world and if the route design is anything to go by don't expect comple dungeons either.
You can be hyped but be hyped with caution
