This game INHERENTLY doesn't look that bad. I mean, the artstyle is clashing between the characters/environments, and obviously floating cats, but the textures/models all look WAY better than SwSh, and SwSh has the advantage of being mostly scripted hallways where they can and should be focusing on making high quality visuals for only what the player can see.

It's okay for a pokemon game but since it's a switch console game I guess people myself included expected better graphics.

I'm sure if there was following pokemon to liven up the place it'd be better but as it is everywhere in the games look lifeless and static.
The Dex Issue also has put a magnifying glass over everything, they shot themselves in the foot with this decision.

No, it really doesn't. And you don't even need to stray too far outside of Pokémon games, either. Pic related has better graphics, more detailed backgrounds, GI in the environment, much further draw distance with actual geometry instead of 2D images, shadow maps with self-shadows, all this and the game runs at 60fps.

Sword and Shield on the other hand has PS2-tier environments with much less detail, a simple art style, and it still somehow manages to run at a shitty frame rate of barely 30fps.

My hope is that they at least polish up shadows and the fucking trees in the wild area.
But yeah that town looked passable, what isnt ok is the damn camera not being movable.
It would have been ok if the graphics were top notch and they were doing some kind of trickery but with those graphics we should have had full 3d camera even in towns.

Do you play other switch games? The only switch games that look significantly better than this are a handful of first party Nintendo games and Xenoblade. People like to compare it to ps4 screenshots of dragon quest but the ps4 is around 4-5x stronger than the switch.

Most of the complaints that people have with this games graphics are actually complaints about the switchs power. Nintendo is able to squeeze much more out of it because they're geniuses but ultimately the switch is extremely weak. For most studios it's hard to make the game look good while also running at 1080p with a decent frame rate. If you want better graphics you're gonna have to wait for the switch 2 in 4 years.

Doubt it. This is a inherent design problem. Game Freak is developing 3D games, but they still have the 2D game development mentality. They design 3D games the way they used to design 2D games. From early on during pre-production they decide to go the very simple art-style route. It doesn't help the fact that their technical artists look inexperienced af. No one seems to grasp how physically-based lighting behaves, and because of that, every model have those ultra-bright fresnel lightings. They misunderstand how this technique works and go trigger-happy with it.

They could have the best target hardware in the world to work with and they would still make a game that looks one-decade behind graphically.

Nintendo is involved for sure with Sword Shield.

Dataminers found out that the engine Let's Go uses is a brand new graphical engine with an new format that mixes Gamefreak's on engine
with Nintendo SDK (engine used in BOTW) and Lunchbox (Engine used in Splatoon/AnimalCrossing games).

Both of those engines have never been used in a non-Nintendo game before. So Gamefreak has clearly gotten help from Nintendo.

You get back here with those goalposts, that's completely besides the point. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 was in the exact same position but Nintendo didn't have a hand in that game's development at all, you can't extrapolate anything from it. As far as we know both games were developed 100% by Team Ninja and PlatinumGames, respectively.

We I'm fact know that's not the case. One of the developers at platinum recently said Nintendo made them change the setting of astral chain which platinum wanted to be a mideival fantasy game. We dont know the exact involvement of Nintendo but yes they are a part of the development of the game.

The game is a definite step up from past Pokemon games at least. And as far as Switch Games go, it's pretty much middle ground. It's not top tier like Mario Odyssey, but it's not terrible like a lot of the cheap games on it.

That's not how this works. They likely reused a lot of the code structure and whatnot from it, but it's not like this is the same system at all.
Literally the whole point of LGPE was them testing the new Switch Pokemon system they were working on for this game.
